Trailbusters

Hello Everyone!  Herman the Clubhouse Mouse reporting for the Trailbusters Snowmobile Club.  This month, I don't have anything to report from the Trailbusters.  Their January meeting only had a few in attendances since it fell the same day as the Vintage Ride in the Hills.  Lola and I are as guilty as the rest for not being there.  We joined the Rusty Nutz for a fun filled weekend of old and new sleds and friends.  I know Jean Kennedy will do a great job giving everyone the lowdown of the events of the weekend.  I'll try to add some of my own highlights as well.

Lola and I got to meet people who brought their vintage sleds from all over South Dakota and even Minnesota.  There was an interesting variety as you can see by the pictures.  They weren't making mouse sized sleds back when these were made, so Lola and I just rode our new ones.  We kept pace with those dinosaurs pretty well.  Of course, some are in better running condition than others.

Whether you've got access to a vintage sled or not, try to make plans to attend next year's Vintage Ride.  It's a hoot to see the old sleds and their riders in action.

Meanwhile, back at the clubhouse...

I've overheard that several families from our club will be attending the Governor's Ride over President's Day weekend in Deadwood.  We've got our rooms booked and are ready to go.  It's a great opportunity to showcase our sport and share it with our lawmakers.

The weekend after that is our club ride at Mallo Camp.  Good thing Lola and I don't take up much space, the rooms are fully booked plus a little extra.  That will be quite the adventure.  It is fun to see how the kids (and adults) advance their riding skills from one year to the next.  I'll be sure to report who the lucky winner of the Dumb Delbert award is this year along with all the gory details- hope it's not me.

We do have one more meeting scheduled before all this fun begins.  It will be Saturday, February 11, at 7:30 pm at the clubhouse.  The Lund family is in charge of munchies.  Member or not - everyone is welcome.

See you in the snow,

Herman the Clubhouse Mouse

January 29th has come and gone, but the fun and excitement of the Poker Run is still being talked about. Congratulations to First Place winner Mike Warner, Lake Preston, Second, Todd Wilkinson, De Smet and Third, Richard Jensen, Badger for drawing the three best hands from the 292 hands dealt. From the participants that made it to at least 10 stops, Laura Hojer, Oldham, won the $100 cash prize. A HUGE – THANK YOU to Randy Beck and Rhonda Wallum for allowing our club to headquarter the run from the Kingsbury County Country Club (now known as Third Base (the last place you are at before you go home!) in De Smet.  To the other businesses that stamped all the cards, THANKS to Bryant Cenex, Bullpen, Lakeview, Siouxland, 1481 Grille, Schmidty’s, Bunker’s Auto, Oldham Saloon, Boomers, Dakota Back Roads, General Store, Main Stop and Cowboy Country Store. The support from the Poinsett Pounders was fantastic and to that we say thank you to all of you that participated. And THANKS to our club members for making the day possible.

Super Bowl is fast approaching. Stay turned for next month’s article to see who the Super Winner of our Monday Night Football Book Raffle turns out to be.

By the time you will be reading this article, the planning and organization for the Governor’s Ride will be final and we will all be headed to the Black Hills to spend the President’s Day weekend snowmobiling with family and friends. If last minute plans allow you to join us, give me a call. We can’t guarantee you we’ll have an extra room, but it would be worth checking with us if that is what it takes to get you there.

A Membership Newsletter was sent out the first week of January. There are just a few members left to renew their dues for this season as they continue to trickle in after the reminder. New memberships to our club this year include Mik Albrecht, Steve and Laurie Anderson, Paul Bindert, Lance Lee, Mike Parmely, Ryan Pedersen, Shane Waikel with Hiles Farm and Feedlot, Trustworthy Hardware, Wards Bar and Grill and Third Base as Associate members. Welcome Aboard!!

Our February meeting will be held on the 15th at The Bullpen in Lake Norden. We move to The Stumble Inn in Iroquois on March 21st. Both meetings will start at 7:30pm. Should we bet to see if we will be riding our sleds to these meetings?

Don’t forget the “Snowmobilers Helping Snowmobilers” fund raiser on February 4th, near Gary, SD sponsored by the Dakota Trail Blazers and the Poinsett Pounders.

Come Ride the Four Lakes Trail System. Ride Safe, Ride Smart, Ride with Pride!

We met at the Pizza Ranch on Thurs Jan 5th for our monthly club meeting.  We had room reservations for Jan 12th at the Comfort Inn in Deadwood for our club ride.  With the warm weather the western part of the state was experiencing and the conditions of the trails we pushed the 'Panic Button' and went to Plan B.  During the meeting club president, Greg Nordstrom, made a call to Deer Haven Lodge in the southern big horns and they had rooms available so we made reservations right on the spot and cancelled at the Comfort Inn.  We later learned the hills got 10 inches of new snow that next week so we could have went there. There were 11 of us who went to the Big Horns, some of who had never been to the southern end. The riding was good and everyone had a great time.  One evening we even revived a old tradition of making homemade ice cream at Dean Austads cabin.

Winter has set in here in Sioux Falls.  We have four and a half inches on the ground and more is on the way today.  Our safety class is scheduled for this Saturday Jan 28th at MidAmerica Motoplex and we should be able to do the outside portion of the course with the recent snowfall.

Several of us are planning on attending the Governors Ride next month.  We look forward to the event every year and hope this year is no exception.  We hope to get in a local ride now that we have some snow on the ground.  Our next one is scheduled for the 2nd sunday in February.  We have a social coming up later this week at one of our associate members businesses.  We hope to get together each month and patronize our associate members to swap stories and pictures of our latest adventures.  Until next month.........

Watertown Snowmobile Club

Well there sure haven’t been very many things to report from the Watertown Snowmobile Club with Mother Nature not helping us out much! Although was nice to see the snow finally falling last week. Our son had to get his sled out for a quick ride even though barely enough to cover the grass!

The club held its monthly meeting on January 2nd at the Drake. We discussed our upcoming Poker Run and our TV raffle. Don talked about the new website and about Terry Peak having a new snowmobile club. We planned our monthly events which will include a supper at Flinner’s in Castlewood on January 28th where we will also raffle off a 42 inch tv as a fundraiser for our club.

Our 3rd annual Poker Run was held without snow or atleast not enough to get the sleds out on the trails. It was held on Saturday, January 14th and considering lack of snow we had a nice turnout. We would like to thank the many businesses who donated prizes to give away. The top three best hands went to Christina Streff 1st place, Brian Sowers 2nd place and Travis Fischer 3rd place. Also a big thank you to Artie at Slackers for providing the end place and Sheehan’s for providing the start place!

Our next meeting will be Monday, February 6th at the Drake 7pm. Hope to see you on the trails!

Aberdeen Driftbusters

Hello for the Drift Busters!

It has been an interesting winter so far, the big question is when the snow is going to fall. We can’t give up on winter just yet! Our club would like to recognize Bob Wuertz, who has been the club treasure for twenty six years and this year he will retired from his position. We really appreciate everything you have done Bob, thank you again.

The club just has a ride and stead feed. We had to minus the ride because of lack of snow, but we had a great turn out. We would like to that the Richmond Oasis for letting us use their place for the feed. Hopefully soon we can get everyone together for an actual ride! Also the Drift Busters will be hosting the 2012 convention and we look forward to seeing and meeting everyone there. We are in the processes of assembling committees for the convention.

We hold our club meetings every first Thursday of the month at the Pizza Ranch at 7pm everyone is welcome to attend and we enjoy meeting new faces. On that note hope for snow! After that we can enjoy our trail systems and the sport we all love. Remember we are always looking for new faces so introduce someone new to this great sport! Be safe.

As I write this article, all I can think about is snow, or the lack of it. I can only hope that we will get a HUGE blizzard before the winter is done, so we can all get a ride in (without having to drive to the mountains!).

The winter games are done, and despite the weather not cooperating, we still had a good turnout. We did have to cancel the fishing tournament on Friday due to the unsafe ice conditions, which everyone understood. Saturday we had a lot of wind for the kids that ventured out for the kitty kat races. The big winners for the girls and boys were Delanie Tangen of Bruce and Matthew Olson of Frederick. The family ride still happened, but everyone had to travel by car or hop on the bus! Unfortunately, the fireworks had to be canceled too, due to the foggy and windy conditions.

Sunday was the poker run. Taking home the $3000 first place check was Dan Renkly with a winning hand of 4 Jacks. John Hurley, Curt Hlavacek, and Diane Hiles won 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place respectively. Scott Kindt's name got drawn from all the cards of people who went to all the stops on the poker run, and he won $100. The Z120 snowmobile was won by Dean Skoglund of Estelline.

Overall, it was a good weekend. Wished we would have had the snow like we did last year, but can't have that every year. I would like to thank everyone who came out and had fun and participated in the winter games weekend. Also, a HUGE thank you to everyone who help make it happen and to all the businesses who participate in the poker run.

Until next month,

Linda Schlenker
